New Development Proposed in Bedford

Bedford City and Bedford County Courthouse

Developers have proposed a new community of 55 homes and 181 townhomes on 65 acres of land in Bedford County with 16 of those acres being inside Bedford City. If its approved, this will be the largest development in Bedford in recent years.

In addition to residential units, there would be commercial development in a part of town that has not done well the last couple of years. Close to the proposed development area, a couple of restaurants have closed, local businesses have changed hands and are struggling. This development would help the city, the county, area residences, and local business. It would take 10-15 years to complete the development, but it would create jobs, revenue for the county and city, and could bring new business to the area.

Bedford Va’s National D-Day memorial reported this week they are looking into ways to reinstall the bust of Russian dictator Joseph Stalin. The bust of Stalin created a large controversy in 2010 after it was installed at the National D-Day Memorial. Several veterans groups in Bedford and from other areas of the country. Even Bedford County Board of Supervisors denounced the installation of the bust.

Joseph Stalin was leader of the Soviet Union from 1922 until his death in 1953. He directed the Soviet Army during World War II and was part of the Allies leadership that finally defeated the Axis powers. During his oppressive rule, he systemically eliminated his opponents in the USSR and ordered the killing of ethnic minorities.

Olde Liberty Station Resturant

Liberty Station Bedford VA

Looking for a great place to eat in Bedford VA! Try Olde  Liberty Station. The Station (the locals call it) is a converted train station reused a great themed restaurant and bar.

Norfolk and Western had the station built in 1881 for passenger rail service, it served as a hub for Bedford area commerce. It featured stone walls and a slate roof with a unique pitch. It had a good amount of space for loading and unloading of rail cars (not used as a parking lot). It served as a rail station through two world wars, the great depression, and so many more events (the famous Bedford Boys deployed to war from the station). Closing in 1971, the station changed hands and house different business until 2001 when the current owners opened the restaurant. Liberty Station

Inside, the old ticket counter is the hostess booth. There is a nice bar area with a mural with a train and Sharp Top/Flat Top in the background . The dinning area is spacious and comfortable. On nice days you can eat outside and watch a freight train pass on the still in use rail lines.

In September 2009, a fire devastated the Station. Determined not to lose the restaurant, owner’s Harry and Marty Leist, rebuilt the station to the exact same standards as it was originally built. While everything is very good, try Harry’s cheesecake or just order it to go.

Its a great place to go with family or friends.
