Breweries near Bedford VA

Last weekend a group of friends and I jumped into the car and drove from Bedford Va to Wintergreen VA to visit a couple of breweries. usually we visit are wineries but today we wanted something different.
Wintergreen is a short drive from Bedford VA, only about an hour and half, of driving with fantastic pastoral and mountain views. As we approached Blue Mountain Brewery, we spotted the most unusual car accident (if someone had been injured I wouldn’t post the picture).

Blue Mountain Brewery had a great selection of beers and we ordered the sampler of their beers. The building was great, nicely decorated with a small lounge area with sofas to relax and have a cold beer. There was also patio seating and a great menu for food.

We choose the cheese plate to eat with our beer, there was a mix of fresh fruit, bread, and unusual cheeses that were amazing. One of the cheese was a mustard cheese, never had it before but really enjoyed it.

Blue Mountain’s beer was great. It was a nice mix of different styles but I have to admit it was excellent and pared nicely with the Rockfish Wheat Summer Weiss Beer on a hot day.

Beer Sampling at Devils Backbone brewery

Next, we traveled to Devils Backbone Brewing Company in Roseland VA. Wow, what a place. The building alone wasvery impressive, a stone and wooden structure. Equally impressive was the beer which is produced on-site! We ordered the 10 beer sampler and were delighted with the choice of beer offered by the brewery. I enjoy Hefeweizen and the Wintergreen Weiss (a Bavarian-style Hefeweizen) was much to my liking.

After finishing our sampling, we were escorted to our table table on the patio, where we had a great view of the mountains at sunset and the man-made koi pond.  The food selection is comfort gourmet food.

Fish Tacos at Devils Backbone

A great mix of high quality and comfort. Everything looked great and inviting. Several members of our party got the fish tacos, some got the Veggie Burger, I opted for the meatloaf and garlic mashed potatoes. Based upon the lack of conversation while eating, I would say everyone enjoyed their food.

What a great night we had! This week I also learned a new brewery is being built in the same area. So now we will have three to choose from and I haven’t even mentioned the wineries in the area.

Main Street Eatery, Lynchburg VA

The Main St. Eatery is a Lynchburg mainstay and one of the area’s premier restaurants.  When you enter the Main St. Eatery, you immediately notice the old wood floors and exposed brick walls. You feel as if you’re transported to a fine New York restaurant. There is a nice bar area with a great selection of drinks and window seating with a great view of downtown Lynchburg.

The menu is a great mix of steaks, chicken, seafood and veal. Aged and seasoned to perfection.  It also boasts a great selection of wines and beers from around the world.

When you eat at Main Street Eatery, you have to save room for dessert. They lay out the desserts on a cart and bring them around to the table. Regardless of your tastes for sweets, they have something for you. Great cheesecakes, apple pie, chocolate decedent desserts…….

Oktoberfest at The Main Street Eatery

During the month of October, The Main Street Eatery offers its special Oktoberfest menu, great German dishes cooked to perfection by chef and owner Urs Gabathuler. Authentic German dishes prepared only as a true chef with taste, flavor, and presentation taken into consideration.

Olde Liberty Station Resturant

Liberty Station Bedford VA

Looking for a great place to eat in Bedford VA! Try Olde  Liberty Station. The Station (the locals call it) is a converted train station reused a great themed restaurant and bar.

Norfolk and Western had the station built in 1881 for passenger rail service, it served as a hub for Bedford area commerce. It featured stone walls and a slate roof with a unique pitch. It had a good amount of space for loading and unloading of rail cars (not used as a parking lot). It served as a rail station through two world wars, the great depression, and so many more events (the famous Bedford Boys deployed to war from the station). Closing in 1971, the station changed hands and house different business until 2001 when the current owners opened the restaurant. Liberty Station

Inside, the old ticket counter is the hostess booth. There is a nice bar area with a mural with a train and Sharp Top/Flat Top in the background . The dinning area is spacious and comfortable. On nice days you can eat outside and watch a freight train pass on the still in use rail lines.

In September 2009, a fire devastated the Station. Determined not to lose the restaurant, owner’s Harry and Marty Leist, rebuilt the station to the exact same standards as it was originally built. While everything is very good, try Harry’s cheesecake or just order it to go.

Its a great place to go with family or friends.
