Euthanasia rate down at the Lynchburg Humane Society

Bo is a full blooded boxer found by the Lynchburg Humane SocietyThe Lynchburg Humane Society set an ambitious goal one year ago. They wanted to become a no-kill shelter, in prior years the rate of euthanasia was considered high among local residents. One year after taking over as executive director of the Lynchburg Humane Society, Makena Yarbough announced a 61% decrease in the euthanasia rate.

The Lynchburg Humane Society incorporated several measures to help reduce euthanasia, using education they were able to help 298 animal owners with pet issues or re-home their pet.

There is a low costs spay and neuter clinic all the area shelters use for animals who come through their shelters, it also provides services for those who have limited income.

The shelter has also adopted several other policies that have helped its issues. They work with the press to share information and education. Created an “open room” area for cats, and have gotten the community more involved by having more events.

The Bedford and Lynchburg Humane Society need your help

The Bedford and Lynchburg Humane Society need your help!Bo is a full blooded boxer found by the Lynchburg Humane Society

This holiday season the Bedford Humane Society and the Lynchburg Humane Society need your help.

The Bedford Humane Society is constructing a no-kill shelter to serve Bedford City and Bedford County. While they are raising funds, they are still helping area animals, often helping locate lost pets, assisting with adoptions and those who are having issues providing food and medical services to their pets.
Currently the Bedford Humane Society is competing in two Christmas Tree competitions, one at Mariners Landing and the other is inside the Bedford Welcome Center. Both competitions are from area non-profits and will raise funds for local charities. Please come out and support them.

The Lynchburg Humane Society is in desperate need to dog and cat food. They recently sent out a message asking for food and supplies, usually they have a stockpile of food. They are becoming a no-kill shelter and find they have to keep animals longer, requiring the use of more food and supplies. If your buying food for your pet, pick up an extra bag or two or just send a check.

Cirque du Soleil’s Alegria coming to Roanoke

Cirque du Soleil’s Alegria coming to Roanoke!

In the month of May, Cirque du Soleil is coming to the Roanoke Colosseum. Alergria has been Cirque best selling sound track. It was released in 1995 and spent 65 weeks on the Billboard;s World Music Chart. Its a special performance, rarely seen in this area.

if you are unfamiliar with the Cirque shows, they are a company based in Canada who has returned to the original style of cirques. Instead of animals, you will see acrobats, trapeze artist, contortionist to an amazing sound tract. there is a consistent theme through the show with characters who perform in between the other acts.

From the Cirque du Soleil’s website

Alegría is a mood, a state of mind. The themes of the
show, whose name means “jubilation” in Spanish, are many. Power and the
handing down of power over time, the evolution from ancient monarchies
to modern democracies, old age, youth—it is against this backdrop that
the characters of Alegría play out their lives. Kings’ fools,
minstrels, beggars, old aristocrats and children make up its universe,
along with the clowns, who alone are able to resist the passing of time
and the social transformations that accompany it.”

Witt Fogleman, the Bedford YMCA and Keller Williams team up to send soccer equipment to Uganda

The Richmond Kickers were the first ever PDL (...
Image via Wikipedianda.

In late September Keller Williams agent Rita Ellis met with Henry Kalungi of the Richmond Kickers and had a long talk about the children of Uganda. Henry shared with her the plight of children attempting to enjoy their national sport, soccer. Many do not have shoes, clothes, or even soccer balls. So she sent out a request to Keller Williams agents in Virginia to see if others could help her by donating gently used soccer equipment.

Bedford Va agent Wendy Witt literally took the ball and ran with it. She contacted the Bedford YMCA. Who placed a notice in their newsletter. Well the response from the Bedford community was outstanding! Lots of cleats, shoes, jerseys, socks, shorts and balls were collected. Wendy picked them up and delivered them to Rita in Richmond.

Thanks to all who helped make the lives of children half way around the world better.

Tonight at Awful Athurs Towers- Rev Peyton’s Big Damn Band

Rev Peyton's Big Damn Band perfomSorry for the late notice! Just found out Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band is playing in Roanoke. If you like a mix of blues, rockabilly, and punk..then this is for you.

Rev Peyton plays a traditional style of finger picking which is slowly dying out. His deft skill reminds us of Mississippi John Hurt on speed! His traditional bluies are played at much higher tempo, making it foot stomping dance music. His lyric chime out the hardships of a working class lifestyle. They are clever, funny, and share the plight of the working man.

Breezy Peyton plays the washboard- scratching, banging, beating it while giving some of the best facial expressions by performed ever witnessed by this writer. Mixing her with the drums provides a great staccato background to mix with the Revs smooth burning guitar.

They will also be performing at this years Floyd Fest.. More to come about that….

Olde Liberty Station Resturant

Liberty Station Bedford VA

Looking for a great place to eat in Bedford VA! Try Olde  Liberty Station. The Station (the locals call it) is a converted train station reused a great themed restaurant and bar.

Norfolk and Western had the station built in 1881 for passenger rail service, it served as a hub for Bedford area commerce. It featured stone walls and a slate roof with a unique pitch. It had a good amount of space for loading and unloading of rail cars (not used as a parking lot). It served as a rail station through two world wars, the great depression, and so many more events (the famous Bedford Boys deployed to war from the station). Closing in 1971, the station changed hands and house different business until 2001 when the current owners opened the restaurant. Liberty Station

Inside, the old ticket counter is the hostess booth. There is a nice bar area with a mural with a train and Sharp Top/Flat Top in the background . The dinning area is spacious and comfortable. On nice days you can eat outside and watch a freight train pass on the still in use rail lines.

In September 2009, a fire devastated the Station. Determined not to lose the restaurant, owner’s Harry and Marty Leist, rebuilt the station to the exact same standards as it was originally built. While everything is very good, try Harry’s cheesecake or just order it to go.

Its a great place to go with family or friends.
